As a student studying communication at Washington State University, I have had the pleasure to take many courses that have taught me about the art of communicating. One of these courses was simply called, “Com 101.” At one point during this class, we were taught all the elements required to create and complete a story. When we were assigned a video story in Com 210, I knew I wanted to be able to check off all six required elements of a story as taught in Com 101.
The first element of a story is action. Action within a story can be defined as “what you need to know to understand what follows.” With this in mind, I created action by filming myself driving down a highly used freeway in Seattle. Using the text tool, as well as pan and scope tools, I had the action define the setting and situation of my story. The story in my video is of a WSU alum in a pressing moment of his rising hip hop music career.
Within the next title, I introduce the next element of a story, character. I define the character the same way by introducing Jevy, who he is and what he is doing (performing a show). This leads to the next element of a story, which is thought. I set up thought by letting the audience know that Jevy is facing a challenge (from the action) and must rise to the occasion, or fail miserably.
The remaining three elements of a story are diction, music, and spectacle. The diction is defined by Jevy himself, with his own song playing through the entire duration of the movie – and goes hand in hand with the next element of music. Spectacle is introduced when I slightly stray from the story and show some background shots of his wife and family during the show.
Technically, I used pan and zoom to make a statement during clips. I placed emphasis on crowd shots by applying slow motion to those clips. Furthermore I applied a filter of black and white, leaving orange hues untouched, throughout the entire duration of the video. I chose that because I wanted the stage lights and flashes to remain prominent to support the theme of a concert or rock and roll show.
Storyboard:
I created a three minute video of Jevy’s experience from beginning to end depicting the time spent in Seattle for one of the biggest shows in his career.
:30 – Title sequence and still frame images to “set the stage” of the video. Images will have five seconds each. The remaining 5 seconds will be allotted to transitions. The five images will be:
1. I-5 freeway towards Seattle to show setting/location
2. Wall covered in markings near the Showbox at the Market (wall is somewhat infamous)
3. Inside of the theatre where show will take place
4. Jevy preparing for show
5. Jevy entering staging area to begin show
:30 – Show three separate shots:
1. Jevy entering stage, beginning performance
2. Crowd reacting to Jevy
3. Jevy’s “crew” show DJ, camera man, etc.
______________
1:00 – Show clips alternating between Jevy and crowd, using editing skills to align the video along with the chosen song from Jevy, “I’m a King.”
______________
:30 – Jevy winding down with crowd, three clips:
1. Limiting his stage movements to focus on specific crowd sections
2. Introduce his family supporting him from the backstage, clips of his wife
3. A slow motion video of the crowd waving their hands in support
:30 – End of performance
1. Add slow motion of Jevy emphasising hand movements to complete song
2. Jevy thanking fans and crowd
3. Exit from stage
